USAID Launches
New Project Aimed at Private Sector Development.
USAID’s Dezenvolve Setór Privadu (DSP) program
aimed at private sector development has been officially launched.
The launch was attended by approximately 120 people, including
five Timor-Leste cabinet ministers as well as other senior government
officials, the ambassadors of United States and the United Kingdom,
head of the European Commission, together with representatives
of various UN and other agencies, and members of the private
sector. A private sector representative speaking at the launch
highlighted DSP’s assistance in the formation of the Timor-Leste
Business Forum. It was also noted that DSP would provide the
secretariat for the Business Forum, and would continue to support
the development of the Forum in an effort to strengthen the
country’s business environment. DSP is also supporting
the financial services industry, commercial services, and investigating
agribusiness opportunities for Timor-Leste. (Feb. 21, 2006)
USAID Provides a Course to Government
Officials on International Trade Law.
The International Development Law Organization (IDLO) is conducting
the course for 20 government officials from the Department of
Trade and Commerce in the Ministry of Development, the domestic
and foreign investment agencies, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs,
and the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries in February.
University professors and private businessmen are also participating.
The course provides an overview of the bilateral, regional and
multilateral trade agreements that Timor-Leste is currently
a part of or considering joining in the future. The course is
the first of a series of five on international trade law topics.
