USAID
Partners Bring Vital Services to Temporary Camps
USAID's response to the humanitarian
emergency includes funding through its Office of Foreign
Disaster Assistance (OFDA) and the USAID Small Grants Program
to partners such as CARE and Catholic Relief Services. Vital
services to the country's tens of thousands of internally
displaced persons (IDPs) include water and sanitation facilities,
camp management support, hygiene kits, mosquito nets, and
child protection. (June 15, 2006) |

USAID Keeps
Broadcasts on the Air
To ensure that reliable, timely information about current events
reaches Timor-Leste's residents, USAID is supporting Radio Televisao
Timor-Leste (the country's independent public radio and television
broadcaster) with emergency fuel supplies and support to repair
and maintain its district relay stations. USAID funding also
supports newspaper distribution through its partners to internally
displaced persons (IDPs) and residents outside the capital staying
in temporary camps. (June 15, 2006)
Literacy and Numeracy Training
Continues in Districts
Despite the disturbances in Dili, many activities funded by
USAID's Small Grants Program continue uninterrupted in other
parts of the country. The Women's Interests Forum in the exclave
of Oecusse recently held a two-day training session on bookkeeping
and literacy for 58 women. Another training session is scheduled
for this week. In Covalima, in western Timor-Leste, the Foundation
for the Future of the Community has improved the literacy and
numeracy skills of about 90 participants since its training
program began in early May. In eastern Timor-Leste, Crystal
Foundation has provided similar literacy and numeracy training
to more than 175 men and women in Lautem District since early
May. (June 15, 2006)
