Clinic
Reaches Camps with Extra Vehicles USAID
has funded emergency support to Dr. Dan Murphy's health
clinic in the Bairo Pite area of Dili, one of the busiest
public clinics in the city. The funds have provided four
rental vehicles to take staff to the IDP camps in and around
the city and have paid for repairs to three vehicles owned
by the clinic. The vehicles are also serving as ambulances
for those patients who need transport to the national hospital.
The clinic covers 3 IDP camps in Dili and camps in Liquica
and Atabae west of Dili. (June 20, 2006) |

USAID Monitors
Crisis-Driven Price Hikes
Staff at USAID's private-sector development project have been
monitoring economic activity in five of Timor-Leste's districts
since the start of the civil disturbances at the end of April.
They report significant increases in prices for fuel, transport,
and the nine major foods in all five districts. Prices for basic
foodstuffs have risen between 5% and 50%. Fuel prices are up
between 20% and 100%. Transport costs have shown the biggest
overall hike, doubling in the four districts were transport
is still available between the district and Dili. No transport
is available currently between the Oecusse exclave and Dili,
although media reports indicate that Indonesia will open a border
crossing soon. (June 20, 2006)
