Health Project
Expands Role to Help Displaced Families
USAID health partner has expanded its mother-and-child health
projects to address the needs of the tens of thousands of internally
displaced persons (IDPs) living in camps in Dili and other district
centers. The IDP work includes the distribution of insecticide-treated
mosquito nets and lessons in health promotion to help prevent
malaria and improve hygiene practices. With USAID partners Catholic
Relief Services and HealthNet International, TAIS has delivered
almost 15,000 nets to 11,000 families in Dili IDP camps. TAIS's
long-term project work focuses on strengthening best practices
in child and maternal health by using integrated management
of childhood illnesses, including immunization; micro-nutritional
supplements (such as vitamin A and zinc, which reduce mortality
associated with respiratory and diarrhoeal diseases), and prevention
of priority infectious diseases, such as malaria, dengue, and
pneumonia. (July 12, 2006)
Mobile Radio Broadcasts Bring News to Remote Districts
Through a USAID grant, Radio Rakambia is taking its mobile broadcasting
unit to the four districts not currently covered by Radio Televisaun
Timor-Leste (RTTL), the public broadcaster. Rakambia will record
and then rebroadcast news and information from RTTL at eight
locations in Aileu, Ainaro, Same, and Covalima. Transmissions
will last between 9 and 10 hours in each location. With almost
80,000 internally displaced persons outside Dili, dissemination
of reliable and timely news is vital. (July 12, 2006)
