USAID Partners
Promote Discussion of Electoral Laws
USAID partners IFES and IRI are helping local NGOs hold a series
of public discussions on proposed legislation that will regulate
the country's next elections, planned for the first half of
2007. Two sets of draft electoral laws are circulating: one
set from Parliament's majority party and the other set from
opposition members. Next year's parliamentary and presidential
polls will be the first since Timor-Leste gained its independence
in 2002. The public sessions on the draft laws, facilitated
by NGOs East Timor People's Action and Women's Caucus, will
be held in Dili and three district capitals. (Sept. 13, 2006)
