New Project on Development of Candlenut Enterprises Commences
Development of Candlenut Enterprises in Timor-Leste is a new project implemented by USAID partner Catholic Relief Service (CRS). The duration of the project is three years (September 27, 2006 – September 21, 2009). The project will focus on enterprise management skill building, introduction of new production and harvest technology, facilitatation of linkages between buyers, traders, and farmers, research and development of new markets and uses of candlenut products, and development of supporting markets, particularly financial markets. The project aims to assist in the organization of candlenut market stakeholders to enhance their ability to extract the full market value from their candlenut. (Oct. 10, 2006)

USAID Begins New Project on Agribusiness Capacity Building
USAID has begun its new project on Agribusiness Capacity Building in Timor-Leste’s Agriculture High Schools, implemented by Land O’Lakes. The project is designed for two years (September 26, 2006 – September 21, 2008) to promote economic growth and alleviate poverty by strengthening Timor-Leste’s agricultural economy through increased agribusiness training capacity. The project aims to strengthen existing capacity at three agriculture high schools in the livestock, apiculture, and horticulture sectors. Land O’Lakes will develop a technical resource center at each school and will work with the East Timor Development Agency, and Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry to implement the project. TAIS Launch Continues Coverage and Quality Improvement (CCQI) Program
USAID partner Timor-Leste Assistencia Integrado Saude (TAIS) recently launched the CCQI program in the district of Manatuto. CCQI is the model endorsed by the Ministry of Health and implemented with technical assistance from TAIS to continuously improve the quality to extend effective, proven, newborn, and child health intervention in Timor-Leste in a collaborative and participatory way. The program was formally introduced to health partners, district authorities, NGOs, the Church, and community-based organization in the district. This introduction marked the first stage of CCQI program. (Oct. 10, 2006)
