USAID-Assisted Transport Association
Makes Its First Food Aid Delivery To Oecussi Enclave
To respond to the World Food Program's urgent request
for food aid delivery to Oecussi, a convoy of five trucks from
the USAID-assisted Truck Transport Association delivered by
land 52 metric tons of assorted food commodities to the enclave
situated wholly in Indonesian West Timor on January 31st. USAID’s
Private Sector Development Project (DSP) has been assisting
the truckers’ association with capacity building and,
in this instance, facilitating the paperwork for the trucks
to be able to cross the border.
USAID Private Sector Development Facilitates
Cattle Trade
USAID’s Private Sector Development
Project (DSP) has facilitated the sale of 42 heads of cattle
valued at US$5,700 for eight traders and 17 farmers from Bobonaro,
Lautem and Covalima districts. The activity links rural traders
and farmers to market opportunities, including supply of young
bulls to the NCBA/CCT (Cooperative Café Timor-Leste)
cattle fattening program. DSP plans to identify additional farmers,
traders and buyers to build a network for increased cattle trade,
especially for farmers from the eastern districts who are being
reintroduced to markets following restricted trade due to the
security situation.
First Lady Opens Workshop on Infant
and Young Child Feeding
Timor-Leste's First Lady, Kirsty Sword
Gusmao, last week opened a three-day workshop on Infant and
Young Child Feeding in Dili. The workshop, attended by Timor-Leste’s
health workers, identified key interventions to combat malnutrition,
such as exclusive breastfeeding, complementary feeding, and
micronutrient supplementation. The workshop concluded that the
integrated delivery of these interventions could help halve
the country’s high child mortality rate by 2010. The workshop
was jointly sponsored by USAID partner, Timor-Leste Assistencia
Integradu Saude; the Ministry of Health; UNICEF; WHO; and other
organizations working in the nutrition sector.
