More Women Attending Political
Party Trainings
Women’s participation increased substantially in the second
round of political party trainings conducted by USAID partner
International Republican Institute (IRI) in coordination with
the United Nations Development Program (UNDP). Eight out of
fifteen registered political parties have participated in the
trainings. While the first round of the training registered
a low percentage (5-8%) of women participants, the second round
attracted 71 women participants out of 291 (24%) total number
of attendees. The official campaign period for the April 9 presidential
elections started last March 23. The USAID-backed training is
focusing on the legislative elections, the date of which has
yet to be announced. (March 26, 2007)
