New
Ambassador Visits IDP Camps
Newly arrived U.S. Ambassador Hans Klemm visited
five camps for internally displaced people (IDP) managed by
USAID partners CARE and Catholic Relief Services in the capital.
More than a year after violence broke out, 30,000 people remain
in camps in and around Dili. Many of the IDPs do not have houses
to go back to. An assessment conducted by the Government and
UNDP showed that 3,119 houses were destroyed; 2,242 damaged;
and many more illegally occupied. Security concerns also prevent
many IDPs from returning home. To date, the U.S. Government
has provided nearly $6.5 million of assistance in direct response
to the crisis. (July 30,2007)
