Villages to Benefit from Literacy and Numeracy Training Program
USAID's small grants program and the
Ministry of Education recently trained members of a local NGO
in the western border district of Bobonaro to deliver literacy
and numeracy courses to five villages starting this month. The
training of trainers signals the expansion of USAID’s
literacy and numeracy training program for economically active
adults to Bobonaro, thus far the eighth district (out of 13)
covered by the program. Since 2005, USAID has supported the
development of basic literacy and numeracy skills among almost
2,000 people, 75% of whom are women. Timor-Leste is suffering
from a high illiteracy rate of over 50%, with women comprising
two-thirds of the illiterate population. (September 10, 2007)
