USAID Helps Civil Society Understand New Civil Code/ USAID Ajuda Sosiedade Sivíl Kompriende Kódigu Sivíl Foun

USAID project trainers are working with legal aid partners to help them better understand and use the country's new Civil Code, which comes into force in March. The code is written in Portuguese, which is not widely spoken, so the USAID-supported training sessions are conducted in the local language, Tetun. The new civil code governs four main areas: contracts, land and property, family, and succession. USAID's legal aid partners work with thousands of clients across the country to mediate disputes and provide access to the formal justice system.
