USAID almost always implements its programs through contractors and grantees, working with organizations that have an extensive experience in its activity base. In Timor-Leste, the following contractors and grantees are implementing USAID's various programs:
The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations helps developing countries and countries in transition modernize and improve agriculture, forestry and fisheries practices and ensure good nutrition for all. In collaboration with the FAO, USAID supports efforts to raise public awareness on avian flu.
Health Alliance International (HAI) is an international public health organization, loosely affiliated with the University of Washington, that works with government Ministries of Health to boost the overall health infrastructure of a country. It is administering the Child Survival and Health Grants Program and Promoting Community Demand for Child Spacing project.
The International Center for Journalists is a
professional organization that promotes quality journalism worldwide through
hands-on training by journalists for journalists. ICFJ administers the
Strengthening Independent Media Program. Land O’Lakes is a leading farm-to-market agribusiness in the U.S. applying a practical and integrated approach to international economic development. LOL administers the Building Agribusiness Capacity project.
Management Sciences for Development provides technical support that enables governments and civil society to develop and implement sustainable programs that promote and protect the rights of marginalized populations in developing democracies and societies in transition. MSD administers the Justice Institutions Strengthening Program.
Mercy Corps is a non-governmental organization that assists people afflicted by conflict or disaster. Mercy Corps administers the peace-building program Youth for All for Peace and Reconciliation (Y4A). National Cooperatives Business Association works with various national membership associations for cooperatives, helping them develop effective, sustainable businesses, community-based organizations and democratic practices. NCBA administers the Timor Economic Rehabilitation and Development Project and recently entered a Global Development Alliance with USAID to form the Timor-Leste Investment Alliance.
John Snow, Inc., which implements USAID’s Basic Support for Institutionalizing Child Survival or BASICS, joined forces with Partnership for Child Health, which implements Immunization Basics, to establish Timor-Leste Assistencia Integradu Saúde (TAIS) or Timor-Leste Integrated Health Assistance to improve health services at the sub-district and community levels.
The United Nations Development Programme is the United Nations global development network, working with 166 countries on their own solutions to global and national development challenges. UNDP administers the Institutional Capacity Development Support Project in Timor-Leste.
The World Food Programme is the United Nations frontline agency in the fight against global hunger. WFP operations include refugee crises and other emergencies, improving the nutrition of the world’s most vulnerable people, and enabling development by promoting the self-reliance of poor people and communities. USAID channels its emergency food aid to Timor-Leste’s vulnerable populations through WFP.
